Milestone concert is a grand success for Choir

The following Review of the Choir's 75th Anniversary Concert appeared in the South Wales Evening Post on Monday 3 May

Saturday night saw the Morriston Orpheus Choir perform its 75th annual concert at Swansea's Brangwyn Hall.

The choir opened the concert with its founder conductor Ivor Sims's arrangement of God Save The Queen written for their Royal Command Performance of 1957. This set the scene for the evening with the choir ably conducted by their musical director Joy Amman Davies and supported by The Chamber Orchestra of Wales.

The Orpheus has always been a choir that has enthralled and entertained, and Saturday night's performance was no exception. It has also been a choir who, through its supporters' organisation MOCSA, has encouraged young singers. We were told how a young staff nurse from Swansea's Morriston Hospital used to sing with the choir in concerts away, and how she also became a MOCSA winner — internationally- renowned, Grammy Award winner Rebecca Evans, one of the concert soloists. Her performance with the choir of The Easter Hymn from Cavalleria Rusticana was truly magical.

The other soloist of the evening was Gary Griffiths, another previous MOCSA winner. With his rich baritone voice, it is no surprise he is being compared to a young Bryn Terfel.

It is said the aim of the choir when it was formed in 1935 was, in the words of Sir Walford Davies ''to make music joyously'' this they certainly did, and when the soloists, choir and orchestra joined forces to perform encore ''It's time to say good-bye'' many of the audience could scarcely believe almost three hours had passed.
