40th MOCSA winner is announced

The 40th MOCSA Young Welsh Singer of the Year Competition came to its climax at The Orangery in Margam Park, Port Talbot on Sunday 11 September 2016.

The four Finalists were:

Michael Ronan A 23 year old Baritone from Crewe (Father born in Swansea) studying at The Royal Academy of Music.

Elgan Llyr Thomas A 26 year old Tenor from St Asaph, studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama

Rhian Saunders     A 24 year old Soprano from Australia (Father born in Cardiff), studying at Wales International Academy of Voice

Robert Garland. A 27 year old Baritone from Northampton (Father born in Mold), studying at The Royal Academy of Music.

An enthusiastic audience saw the Finalists perform a variety of music ranging from John Ireland's Sea Fever and R S Hughes' Arafa Don to  the arias of Mozart, Bellini and Donizetti. A full programme from the Morriston Orpheus Choir added to a feast of music in the late Summer sunshine.

Paying particular attention to the solo performances was a distingused panel of Adjudicators in Julian Smith, Huw Tregelles Williams and Rebecca Evans whose success in the 1989 MOCSA Competition was the foreruner to a glittering career on the International opera stage.

All four Finalists in the MOCSA Competition will be hoping to repeat the success that Rebecca Evans has achieved but on this occasion there could only be one winner. The unanimous decision of the Adjudication panel was that the  2016 MOCSA Young Welsh Singer of the Year is Robert Garland.
