Musical Director (MD) Vacancy with the Morriston Orpheus Choir
A vacancy has arisen due to the departure of our MD, Conal Bembridge-Sayers. Conal proved to be a great vocal coach and his musical talent is very much appreciated. He conducted the Choir at several prestigious engagements including: a TV appearance on "Songs of Praise"; the Savoy Hotel in London and our sold out 2023 Annual Concert. We wish him success for the future.
We are aiming to appoint a new MD in 2024 and applications are invited for this post. We are lucky to have Ieuan Jones as our caretaker MD until this position is filled.The Orpheus is one of the leading male voice choirs in Wales and has a wide repertoire. It retains traditional Welsh songs but also includes a mixture of styles to ensure that our audiences have variety. The Choir has established an international reputation due to worldwide travel. Candidates should:
Possess a professional musical background with practical experience as a MD.
Have a working knowledge of traditional Welsh language songs.
Conduct the Choir in its busy concert programme at a variety of venues,some of which will involve overnight stays. Approximately 25 events a year have been the norm in recent years.
Hold rehearsals twice a week, currently Wednesday and Sunday evenings.
Be ready to introduce new music to the repertoire whilst maintaining the Choir’s cultural links with Wales.
Possess good interpersonal communication skills and a forward looking attitude which will assist the Choir's future development.
Utilise good communication and people skills to enable team working with accompanists, choristers, and the Choir committee.
