ALWYN HUMPHREYS TO BE DOCTOR OF MUSIC

The University of Hull has announced that it is to confer the degree of Doctor of Music upon Alwyn Humphreys, Conductor Emeritus of the Morriston Orpheus Choir.
Anglesey-born Mr Humphreys stepped down as Musical Director of the internationally-acclaimed choir in January 2005 after 25 years, during which time they appeared at some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall. They also won 3 ‘Best Choral’ recording awards, achieved 2 silver discs and reached the British Top Ten Classical Album Charts.
Mr Humphreys graduated with honours in music at the University of Hull in 1966 and subsequently became lecturer at the music department of Mabel Fletcher College, Liverpool. He was a staff producer/director at BBC Wales, Cardiff for 13 years, later moving to HTV before becoming a free-lance television presenter. He was created an MBE in the Queen’s 2001 New Year’s Honours List for services to music in Wales, and his musical arrangements for male choir now number over 200 with publications in both Britain and the USA.
