Rest in Peace Huw

They would love to hear any additional stories, anecdotes and memories you have of their Dad. The  Choir will collect any memories you wish to share and pass onto the family, so please email directly to events@morristonorpheus.com.

                                                       —————————

The Morriston Orpheus Choir is deeply saddened to record the passing of Vice President, Life Member and stalwart of the Choir’s Bass section, Huw Madoc-Jones.

Huw was Chairman of the Choir a record six times, 1985-6, 1987-8, 1989-90, 1990-91, 1992-93, and 1999-2000, and indeed was regarded by many as one of the finest chairman in our Choir’s history. To many of our choristers today he was quite simply “Mr Morriston Orpheus”; forever helping and guiding us in the right direction. He lived and cared for the Choir and was deeply passionate about all aspects of Morriston Orpheus life.

A devotee of the Welsh language, Welsh male voice choirs, and with a perfectly polished performance at every concert, Huw was visibly honoured and delighted to receive his 40 years of service award at our 2019 Annual Gala Concert.

Speaking five languages, including Welsh, English and Russian, before Huw joined the Choir he was a Group Captain in the RAF, following in his father’s footsteps.

Both Huw and his late wife Norma took an active part in Choir activities from the onset. Heavily involving themselves with the ‘Friends of Morriston Orpheus Choir'; an organisation which worked alongside MOCSA (The Morriston Orpheus Choir Supporters’ Association) in raising funds for the Choir. Norma actually provided the blue woven Choir banner seen on stage at every Orpheus concert. (Pictured during our recent visit to Ireland). Huw also played a key part in MOCSA itself and was active in its continuing development and day to day running, even when his health was failing. He was made a Vice President of MOCSA in recognition of his services to the Association.

Huw was an absolute character of the Choir. He firmly introduced himself to new choristers, by giving them the warmest of welcomes to the Choir and above all knew the Choir’s rules by heart, ensuring these were conscientiously followed by each member.

It is with no doubt that we can say Huw has helped nurture, shape and guide The Morriston Orpheus Choir, over his 40 years of service, into the Choir we are today, and we will ALL, deeply miss him. He was indeed one of the finest gentleman and great friend to us all.

He is survived by his two children, Gwynfa and David, who are both very much in the Choir’s thoughts and prayers.

From us all Huw, we thank you for your loyalty and dedication. We thank you for all your tireless hard work, but above all, we thank you for being you!

May you rest in peace dear friend.

Boed i chi orffwys mewn heddwch annwyl gyfaill.

Huw’s funeral will be on Tuesday 19 November. There will be a private cremation and friends are invited to a Service of Celebration of Huw’s life which will take place afterwards at Mynyddbach Chapel (The Calon Lan Centre) at 1pm.
