Young Welsh Singer of the Year Competition

In normal circumstances the Morriston Orpheus Choir's Supporters’ Association (MOCSA) would now be launching the 2020 Young Welsh Singer of the Year Competition. The annual competition, which has been running continuously for over 40 years, provides a valuable opportunity for young classical singers with a Welsh background to showcase their talent in search of the prestigious title.

A date for this year’s MOCSA concert, which features the Final of the Competition, has been earmarked for September but it remains very unclear whether gatherings of hundreds of people at concert venues will even be allowed at that time. Prior to the concert however much work also needs to be done, not least in selecting the finalists. Again the practicalities of organising heats over the next few months, with individuals required to travel across the country, are very unclear. Options of holding virtual heats have been examined but there are significant issues with doing that.

In the light of the current uncertainty the MOCSA Committee has this week been left with little option other than to suspend the launch of this year’s Competition. The situation will be kept under regular review and as soon as circumstances allow the aim will be to launch the Competition and continue this long standing support and encouragement of young singers. Further information will be posted on the Choir website as it becomes available.

We appreciate this will be a disappointment to many classical music students looking to enter this year’s Competition. If you would like us to keep you in touch with future developments please drop an email with your details to competition@morristonorpheus.com
