In Celebration Of St David's Day

Review 27 February 2006

A Mayoral Charity Concert Saturday 25 February 2006 at Brecon Cathedral

A St. David's Day Concert on Saturday 25th February, 2006 at Brecon Cathedral
was sold out when the audience learned that the world famous Morriston Orpheus Choir would be performing in Brecon for the first time this Century. They were not disappointed. The choir led by their musical director Sian Pearce and accompanied by Joy Amman Davies gave a magnificent performance of traditional Welsh favourites and included a Zulu chant and a Maori lullaby in the programme, however the arrangement and performance of Bohemian Rhapsody included within the finale drew great admiration from those present for an excellent performance of a very exacting piece.

The soloist was soprano Sarah Jane Davies graduate of The Royal College of Music whose family live in Sennybridge. Sarah Jane sang as part of her programme Puccini's O mio babbino caro.Sarah a member of the National Opera has been selected as a finalist to compete for selection as the Welsh Representative for the Singer of the World competition to be held this year in Cardiff. The depth and beauty of her voice and the very high standard of the pieces she performed were superb and she was wished every success in competition.

Cor Ysgol y Bannau a Welsh Primary school choir began the second half with confidence and enchanted young and old alike with their performance.

The compere for the evening, Mr. Glyn Mathias a former ITN and BBC news reporter and political editor, performed his duties in ensuring that the evening ran in seamless continuity and with perfect pronunciation of Welsh, Latin, Italian and Maori gave an insight into the pieces which were going to be performed. Glyn read from selected Welsh poets in English which was really enjoyed by the audience.

The Mayor of Brecon Councillor Chris Walsh whose two chosen charities The Keith Morris Appeal and a Diocesan Parenting Project for Brecon will benefit from the event, presented a Brecon Town Council plaque to the Chairman of the choir and bouquets were presented by the Mayoress Lynne Walsh to the musical director, the soloist and the accompanist. The Mayor thanked everyone who had worked hard to make the evening so successful. He commented on the marvellous evening which had provided a concert that will be long remembered by those who were fortunate to be present.
