Orpheus in Machynlleth

On 18th November 2006, the Morriston Orpheus Choir returns to Machynlleth where, in 1937 and only two years after its formation by Ivor E Sims, it achieved the first of its many successes at the National Eisteddfod.   This will be the first opportunity for an audience in that part of Wales to hear the Choir perform under the baton of Musical Director Siân Pearce, appointed in 2004 following the retirement of Alwyn Humphreys. Siân is the first lady in the Choir`s 71 year history to be appointed to the post of Musical Director and brings to it a wide breadth of musical experience gained on stage at home and abroad.

In April 2007 she will undertake her first major overseas tour with the Choir, visiting the United Arab Emirates, Australia and New Zealand.   The Machynlleth audience will hear some of the items that the Choir will perform on that tour which will culminate in two performances at the Sydney Opera House.

Guest soloist at  Machynlleth will be Eirian Davies, baritone, who hails from the village of Cwm Ifor near Llandeilo.   Eirian has sung with the Choir on a number of occasions in Eire, England and Wales, enhancing his reputation wherever he performs.

The concert at the Bro Ddyfi Leisure Centre, (7.00pm) is organised by former RAF Group Captain Huw Madoc-Jones, a member and past Chairman of the Choir, who has close family ties in Machynlleth.   Tickets (£10 unreserved) are on sale at the Leisure Centre or may be ordered by telephoning 01792 851641.
